From the Corner of the Oval A Memoir Beck DoreyStein 9780525509127 Books

I had really high hopes for this book. Somehow I thought this would be more about the Obama White House, the actual travel, the people in the administration. Instead, it was a story filled with tales of drunken evenings, junior high style crushes, disorganized travel and generalized personal angst. It was just a disappointing mess. I stopped reading about halfway through and skipped to the end, hoping for a redemption that wasn't there. I found Ms. Dorey-Stein's writing to be overwrought.

From the Corner of the Oval A Memoir Beck DoreyStein 9780525509127 Books Reviews

If you want to buy this book for an Insider's view of the Obama's White House, don't. Basically it's a brag on how much she can drink and s****w. Not worth the ink
A Unique View of a Side of DC and the Whitehouse Seldom Seen

Beck, as she likes to call herself, writes a unique and personal story of being a very small cog in one of the biggest machines in our world with all the joy, pain, and disappointment of a decidedly open heart. In our world of political cynicism and power pursuit at all costs it is refreshing to see our government in operation thru the eyes of a young lady with all the hopes, dreams, and confusions that life brings to the young and optimistic!!

I found this book to be both touching and interesting. It is valuable to take a step back and view the soft and sometimes difficult passage in the service to our country of people who will never be recognized but who contribute to the success of our experiment in democracy.
I was struck by the title before I read the story review. Of course I had to buy this book because a oval does not have a corner. It is a great read! I liked the human way she handled her characters; not assigning any ethnicity. Some incidents made me LOL. I was delighted that she remembered former President Obama in such a favorable light. I was sorta disappointed that she did not assign a real name to "Rattler". Congrats "Becky" on your first book, I will be checking you for more of your writing. You go girl!
I loved this book. Dorey-Stein was merciless with herself and I must admit to being unable to connect to a 20-something in several ways, but I could read her writing all the way to the moon and back. I loved that it wasn't a tell-all (except on herself). It was, in fact, a lot like watching The West Wing. Her job as a stenographer was one that many of us didn't even realize existed, much less how it was done, and I liked reading about that, too. There is, I will admit, a disconnect from real life for readers like me--she never ran a vacuum or washed a dish or put gas in a car or cooked a meal--but it was still fun and informative.

The title was inspired. It was what drew me in the first place.

This was Ms. Dorey-Stein's first book. I guarantee it won't be her last, and I can't wait to see what comes next.
OK, I rarely write a bad review. But I'm trying to save you. This book is just awful...To be honest, I expected more. I realize this is a first book, but it had been lauded by the media as being so wonderful. What it actually delivers doesn't match at all. After a few interesting details, like how she found the job on Craigslist, and her first few days, it devolves into a ridiculous litany of late 20's angst over multiple boyfriends who cheat on her (who she keeps going back to because she "loves" them so much and makes every excuse to justify her lack of self-esteem/control and spine, for goodness sake!). Oh and BTW, she is cheating on them as well. The rare writing about the job and her interactions with POTUS could be put in a small pamphlet, and then you wouldn't have to suffer through the gratuitous sex (no details, thankfully), the drinking and the general lack of moral code. Most of the book is just "journal writing/self-reflection (never really followed)/therapy" gone bad. Fortunately she doesn't drag Obama into the mire. But I didn't know much more about the White House or POTUS than I already knew. Wish I hadn't paid for such drivel.
The author was at her best when she wrote about her job, especially the travel and the nuts and bolts of what her job involved. Really got sick of the Jason obsession, almost made me quit reading the book. The writing is very good, and parts of the book were excellent.
Wow... what an amazing wordsmith. I found myself going back over paragraphs just for the joy of the prose. Beyond that, I loved the wonderful stories, observations and descriptions about life as a stenographer for the Obama Administration. Reminded me to look up. The author’s insertions about her personal life were candid which made her memoir even more authentic. Highly recommend.
