This is a shorter story than some. But it is a good story. It's a vampire story that I would not be ashamed to have my kids read. Lately more and more of the paranormal books are what my husband terms "pornmance". This is not one of them. No detailed sex scenes. Instead it is an interesting and alternate view on what an Earth with Paranormal creatures might be like. They don't want humans to know about them.
The love story that is this story reminded me in some ways of the *Twilight* series, but it is alot shorter. It's about a teenage girl who deosn't know her best (male) friend is a vampire. She has secretly had a crush on him for a while...... things happen to her that force him to change her, reveling his feelings about her.

I read this series when I was 14, and I thoroughly enjoyed then as I do now. No, it's not the best written thing ever or even L.J. Smiths best work, but it's a nice quick read for people who find vampires and love story's fascinating.

Secret Vampire follows Poppy through a rare illness in teenagers. Pancreatic Cancer. She'd been having the pains for a while, and James could tell there was something wrong with her but he didn’t say anything How can he explain his vampire powers without explaining the whole him being a vampire? But when the diagnoses is complete he offers her a chance to live forever pain free, as a vampire. Poppy doesn’t want to die and she does love James. James loves Poppy but he can’t admit while she's human. Will Phil, Poppy's twin brother, ever give Poppy a chance to change into a vampire?

I liked the characters in the novel. Poppy was the crazy girl who just radiated energy and had a crush on her best friend, who also happened to be the best looking guy in high school and a vampire. James has feelings for Poppy that he can't even register because of the Night World rules stating that one who belongs to the Night World can not fall in love with a human. Phil is on the straight and narrow and can not fathom a world that is not only what he knows, also he hates James and love's Poppy fiercely. The parents were just parents, they were kind of flat. Ash was the wild card.

The book was pretty straightforward. Girl has cancer, boy is vampire, boy turns girl into vampire out of his love for her and to protect her. The only anomaly in the story that I didn't see coming was Ash, but then again Ash is described as a bit of a wild card.

I liked the intricate world of Night World. The weird rules about fraternizing with humans and anyone who's apart of Night World. The rules themselves didn’t really make a lot of sense. But it's still cool to think that there's a supernatural society underneath ours. Or rather above ours seeming as they're all higher in the food chain. But I still enjoy the idea, of witches, vampires, werewolf's, shape shifters, and what ever else L.J. Smith can conjure up.
Its been roughly 20 years since I first discovered L. J. Smith and her Night World series. (Did I just age myself???) Unlike another favorite series from those days, which I re-read in recent years and then questioned my middle grade taste in books, this series is still as amazing as the day I read it.

Smith doesn't waste time with describing every little nuance that her readers honestly aren't going to care about, but within 2 pages I had a solid sense of who the heroine, Poppy, was as a person and how she felt about James, the hero of our story.

I was always a huge fan of the whole Soulmate trope and this series executes it perfectly. For me, there needs to be some kind of supernatural reason for Soulmates to exist, and in a world of vampires, witches, and shifters, it’s very easy to buy into that reasoning. Add in forbidden love and what teen girl could resist! Certainly not this one, even now that I've said goodbye to my teen years ages ago.

This is a short read, but it is utterly satisfying. There's the star-crossed lovers, the villain, and vampires and witches galore! I seriously can’t wait to dive into the rest of these books. Who knows, maybe by the time I re-read the last of them, there will finally be a new release date set for the final book in the series. It's only 17 years past due.

So should you read this one? YES. This was the book for the generation before Twilight. (And the author also created The Vampire Diaries - though the TV series took great liberties with the story. For the better IMO. But that's a whole other book review!) So, what are you waiting for? Go sink your fangs into this amazing series!
Very good book, if your into vampire books or movies you would love this book, there is also a series of these books, whick are great.

I'm a big fan of vampire books, but could never get into the twilight series. This one was a quick read. Most importantly - the heroine didn't annoy me within the first few chapters. Worth a try.
